The Nunkui Project

How and why it came about?
The Nunkui Project was born from a shared passion for sustainability and community empowerment. It began when Dorian, volunteering with CarpeDM Adventures, started visiting the Amazonian community of Tsuraku. His role involved guiding tourists and translating for them to help support sustainable community tourism in the area.
During this time, Dorian met his future wife, Graciela, a member of the Tsuraku community. United by a deep love for the environment and a shared vision for creating sustainable livelihoods for local families, they purchased a small plot of land with the dream of reforesting it — tree by tree.
Their goal was to increase biodiversity, protect native species, and restore a thriving ecosystem. With guidance from renowned reforester Omar Tello at the Puyo Botanical Gardens, and support from Nick, the founder of the NGO Yakum, they began planting a variety of native trees.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, travel restrictions paused their planting efforts. But nature carried on — the forest continued to grow and thrive on its own. After the pandemic, Dorian and Graciela were able to acquire more land and resume their mission with renewed energy.
Since 2025, they’ve been welcoming groups to help plant trees and become part of this growing movement to restore the Amazon — one tree at a time.
Why is there a need ?
The Amazon is facing alarming rates of deforestation, driven in part by the urgent need of local communities to earn a living. With limited economic opportunities, many families rely on the natural resources around them — often in ways that are unsustainable in the long term.
The Nunkui Project seeks to change this. Through reforestation, rewilding, sustainable tourism, and carbon offset initiatives, we aim to create an alternative — one that restores the rainforest while providing meaningful, eco-conscious livelihoods for the people who call it home. By protecting the forest, we’re investing in both the planet’s future and the well-being of Amazonian communities.
What is our solution ?
The Nunkui Project offers a holistic, community-driven solution to the twin challenges of deforestation and poverty in the Amazon.
We protect and restore the rainforest by reforesting degraded land with native trees and committing to their long-term care. Every tree planted contributes to biodiversity, carbon capture, and the regeneration of critical ecosystems.
At the same time, we empower the local community by creating sustainable sources of income through eco-tourism, cultural exchange, and conservation-based employment. Community members are actively involved — from guiding visitors and teaching traditional skills to participating in workshops and managing tourist activities. By equipping families with tools, training, and access to responsible tourism, we help ensure that protecting the forest becomes more valuable than destroying it.
Through carbon offset partnerships, tree sponsorships, and educational programs, we unite global citizens with local action. Together, we are building a greener future for the Amazon — one that sustains both nature and people.
How you can be a part ?
With just a $8 USD contribution, you can sponsor the planting of a native Amazonian tree — and become part of a long-term solution.
Each tree you fund will be carefully planted and maintained, with a 20-year survival guarantee. If the tree is lost during this period, we’ll replace it to ensure your impact endures.
Your contribution does more than grow a tree — it provides meaningful work for local community members, supports rewilding efforts, and helps restore vital ecosystems in deforested areas of the Amazon.
Together, we can regenerate the rainforest — one tree at a time.

What happens next?
Once your tree is planted, you’ll see it featured on our Instagram page, proudly tagged with your name. Trees are typically planted within 2 to 6 months, depending on the timing of the rainy season and local ecological conditions — to give your tree the best chance of survival.
Feeling adventurous?
